Edition: Total number of individual pieces produced in multiplied art (*print, *sculpture, *object, *multiple, *artist book, *photography). Determining the edition size is the artist’s right. This limitation aims to protect artists and collectors from unauthorized reproduction. The total edition will be numbered in Arabic numerals as a fraction, where the numerator indicates the number of the individual piece and the denominator indicates the total edition size (e.g., 25/150, piece 25 of 150). In addition to this edition, artist proofs (E.A., *Epreuve d’Artiste), artist prints (A.P.), hors de commerce (H.C.), and other artist’s prints are often produced for the artist’s own use. These are usually numbered in Roman numerals along with one of the mentioned abbreviations (e.g., II/XV E.A.). Additionally, in the field of printmaking, printers often receive some proof copies, referred to as p.p. (printer’s proof). *E.A.: Abbreviation for Epreuve d’Artiste, so-called artist copies printed in a limited quantity (maximum 10% of the edition) for the artist themselves or cast for bronzes.
